What is Dupuytren's Contracture?

Dupuytren's Contracture is a contraction of the Fascia tissue just under the skin of the palm. The contraction of the tissue causes fingers of the hand to curl and become stiff.

The tendons and ligaments in the hand are not normally affected, but it is the Fascia "sheet like" layer just below the surface of the skin, designed to support the palm of the hand, that becomes stiff and tough. Sometimes there are small hard lumps in the palms. The lumps and the thickening is not normally painful, but can be very inconvenient when having to "shake hands" or open a jar.

Cases are most often isolated to one hand and range from mild to severe. The progressive condition is most common in middle aged men but can affect adults of all ages.

Causes of Dupuytren's Contracture?

While the exact cause of Dupuytren's Contracture is still unknown, a lot of physicians and studies indicate that this could be a hereditary condition. Some research shows evidence of poor circulation to the Fascia tissue which could cause it to shrink.

Other studies show an over production of collagen around the tendons in the palm of the hand. Collagen, a structural protein, is naturally made by the body to facilitate connective tissue. For some reason, this natural process is interrupted and an excessive amount of collagen is manufactured and deposited in the specific areas of the fascia tissue in the palm of the hand.

Treating Dupuytren's

Depending on the severity of the condition, some physicians will treat differently. Some suggest collagenase injections that help release the tension and is suggested for severe cases. Other treatments may included medications and even surgeries.
